About

This Procedure

  • AGE-6 & UP:

  • Children this age are old enough to understand what this procedure entails & can express the desire to want to have this surgery done themselves.

  • They are also mature enough at this age to cooperate easily & follow directions well.

Best timing For Adults:

  • ANYTIME - BUT NEED TO BE:

  • In good physical health.

  • Must be a non-smoker.

Best practice:

  • RIB CARTILAGE IS ALWAYS BEST:

  • In every case regardless of age, creating the Framework from the patient’s own rib cartilage provides the best chance of success & most natural looking results.

About

This Procedure

Best timing For Children:

  • AGE-6: The ear will be 85% of its adult size, there is enough rib cartilage to sculpt the new ear & the child is more capable of being careful post surgery. This is also when most children become aware of the deformity, often due to teasing at school.

Best timing For Adults:

  • ANYTIME: Patients can start the reconstruction process immediately following the loss of an ear due to cancer or as the result of an accident.

Best practice:

  • RIB CARTILAGE IS ALWAYS BEST: In every case regardless of age, creating the Framework from the patient’s own rib cartilage provides the best chance of success & most natural looking results.

Procedure

Introduction

Why Patients Choose Ear Pinning?

  • Children with large or protruding ears are often subjected to teasing or bullying, which can negatively affect self-esteem. Otoplasty can prevent or resolve this issue early in life. Adults, too, often seek this surgery to finally correct a feature that has bothered them since childhood.

  • Many adult patients comment that while they received braces as kids, they wish their parents had addressed their ears as well.

  • Others seek a Secondary Otoplasty to improve the results of a previous ear surgery that did not meet expectations or created new asymmetry.

Procedure Details

What To Expect

How To Prepare:

  • The procedure begins with precise markings that outline natural ear anatomy.

  • It is most commonly performed under general anesthesia.

  • An incision is made behind the ear, hidden in a natural crease.

  • Cartilage is reshaped using fine sutures to create the ear’s natural folds and reduce protrusion.

  • If necessary, the ears are rotated back and secured to improve positioning.

  • A well-padded dressing is placed over the ears to maintain their new shape during early healing.

Ideal Candidates For

Otoplasty

You're likely a good candidate if you:

  • Have prominent, protruding, or oddly shaped ears.

  • Experience asymmetry or ears that feel too large or small.

  • Have suffered an ear injury.

  • Are 6 years or older, with:

    • Desire for the surgery.

    • Good emotional maturity and ability to follow post-op care.

  • Are in overall good health.

  • Are a non-smoker.

  • Are dissatisfied with a prior ear surgery and looking for revision.

Timing for Surgery:

  • Although often performed during early childhood (around age 6), when the ears are about 85% of their adult size, many patients don’t undergo otoplasty until adulthood. Either timing is appropriate depending on personal preference and individual development.

Recovery & Healing

Info & Requirements

Pain Scale:

  • Mild discomfort is normal during the first few days and can be managed with medication.

  • A protective head dressing is worn for one week to support the ears in their new position.

  • Once removed, patients can see their new ear contour immediately, with only mild swelling.

  • Physical activity, sports, or any contact around the ears should be avoided for 6 weeks to ensure proper healing.

  • The small incision scars, hidden behind the ears, may appear red at first but typically fade within a year.

  • Most patients enjoy long-lasting, permanent results.

Secondary Otoplasty

Revision Ear Surgery

What is Secondary Otoplasty?

  • If a previous ear surgery resulted in an unsatisfactory outcome such as unnatural shape, new deformities, or poor positioning a Secondary Otoplasty can correct it.

  • This revision procedure involves restoring more normal anatomical structure to the ear, and Dr. Fairbanks will provide an individual plan after examining the concern.
