Both Options Can include Fat grafting:
Silicone Breast Implants: These are the most popular choice by far. Silicone implants are already filled with a highly cohesive gel prior to insertion. They are designed to mimic the look and feel of natural breast tissue and to maintain their shape over time. If the shell of a silicone implant tears, the cohesive gel is designed to remain inside. In the end, silicone implants deliver a relatively natural look and feel if the proportional size is chosen. The FDA approves the use of silicone breast implants for women age 22 or older.
Saline Breast Implants: These implants are inserted into the body empty and filled with sterile salt water once inside. If one of these implant shells leaks, the implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed by the body. The saline breast implant is still chosen over silicone by several women as these implants also provide a relatively natural look and feel if the proportional size is chosen.
FAQs & Implant Recommendations
Smooth VS Textured:
Overall, Dr. Fairbanks recommends using the smooth, round implants. The smooth shell allows the implant to move more naturally with your existing breast tissue which not only minimizes ruptures and tears it also provides the softest and most natural feel. The smooth round implants also tend to settle faster in the body. This is an advantage because it creates a more natural looking end result. While smooth implants are the most popular choice, certain circumstances may require the use of textured breast implants. Dr. Fairbanks will be able to help you make the best choice for you during the consultation process.
Round VS Teardrop:
Again, Dr. Fairbanks prefers the smooth, round implants because of the fullness and lift they consistently provide patients while still looking and feeling the most natural. Teardrop Implants are textured and are rarely used by Dr. Fairbanks.
Other Procedure Details
Best Placement:
Best Incision Placement: There are three options which include an incision made along the lower margin of the nipple or one in the axilla (arm pit) or inframammary fold (under the breast). Dr. Fairbanks prefers the inframammary incision approach. This entails a small single incision being made under the breast in the breast crease. When implants need to be replaced, this is also the approach. Therefore, he recommends starting there as well.
Best Implant Placement: The implant can be placed directly under the breast tissue for those who already have an adequate amount of tissue to cover the implant. But Dr. Fairbanks preferred placement (and the most commonly practiced) is under the pectoralis muscle.
Final Note On Safety Of Silicone Breast Implants: The FDA has approved silicone breast implants for breast augmentation and states that, “There is no apparent association between silicone gel-filled breast implants and connective tissue disease, breast cancer, or reproductive problems.”
