What is Botulinum Toxin?

Botulinum Toxin injections are a popular way of reducing facial wrinkles without surgery. Botulinum Toxin is produced by the bacteria Clostridia Botulinum. Traditionally, it is considered to be a powerful poison since it causes muscular paralysis. However, when purified, this agent has become useful to medical professionals to create weakness in the sites of over-active muscles. Originally it was used to control eye muscle problems such as strabismus and blepharospasm.

Botulinum Toxin is now approved, by the FDA, to create local weakness (partial paralysis) of the frequently over-active muscles, which cause frowning, forehead wrinkling, and crows’ feet or squinting lines. The result is the aesthetic improvement of fewer noticed wrinkles. Botulinum Toxin is also approved for the treatment of chronic Migraine Headaches and axillary Hyperhidrosis (excess sweating in the armpits).

Various Botulinum Toxin products are on the market. These include:

1. OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®, Botox Cosmetic®)

2. AbobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport®)

3. IncobotulinumtoxinA (Xeomin®)

4. RimabotulinumtoxinB (Myobloc®)

Details of Botox / Botulinum Toxin Injections

For the cosmetic use of Botulinum Toxin, it is diluted, purified, and carefully measured prior to use. Small increments are injected into specific muscle bundles of the face. After 3-4 days, one can notice the improvement in appearance by the reduction or elimination of the ability to wrinkle or frown. With the lack of muscular activity, the wrinkles tend to fade until the muscles regain their tone. This period typically varies from 3-4 months.

For migraine headaches, Botulinum Toxin is injected into the muscle bundles surrounding various nerves that may be irritated. These typically include the corrugator muscles that cause frowning, temporalis muscles, and the muscles in the back of the neck and shoulder.

For excess sweating of the armpits, Botulinum Toxin was injected in this area.

Recovery after Botox / Botulinum Toxin Injections

Initially, the areas of injection may be red. An ice pack after injection helped to reduce the redness. Just the same, this will resolve rather quickly. There is no downtime. Routine activities can be immediately resumed. Massaging of the areas of areas injected is discouraged so that the product doesn’t migrate into other areas of the face and cause an unwanted paralysis

What can I expect?

After 3-4 days, the movement of the muscles injected is decreased or eliminated. This leads to a reduction or elimination of the associated wrinkles.

For migraine headaches, the results vary. Typically one will notice a significant decrease in the severity of the migraine headache over the next 3-4 days.

For excess axillary hyperhidrosis, typically one will notice a significant decrease in the severity of the sweating from the armpits over the next 3-4 days.

Will my results last after Botulinum Toxin injection?

The effects of Botulinum Toxin typically last 3-4 months. Once this has worn off, the muscles will start to regain their function. If someone wants to continue with the same results, another set of injections will be required each time.
