About the Primary Rhinoplasty Procedure

The nose is one of the more distinguishing features of the face. When someone is uncomfortable with the appearance of their nose, it can be a personal distraction. An undesirable nasal appearance can be corrected with the procedure known as Rhinoplasty, frequently referred to as a “Nose Job.”

This is a facial plastic surgery procedure that is known for making people feel more confident about themselves. A Rhinoplasty is often associated with a Septoplasty—correction of the nasal airway—to help one breathe better. These procedures, both Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty, can greatly improve a person’s quality of life.

Unfortunately, there are cases where prior nasal surgery was performed in another office giving the patient unsatisfactory results. The cosmetic results may be less than desired, or the airway may still be obstructed. Just as the flaws of accident-and-nature may be corrected, the flaws of prior Rhinoplasty may also be corrected, with a nose job. This procedure is called a Secondary Rhinoplasty or a Revisionary Rhinoplasty.

Please see the page on Nose Job Correction: Secondary or Revisionary Rhinoplasty for more information.

Procedure Details

The average Rhinoplasty addresses form and function - to the outward appearance, as well as the airway to improve breathing. The goal of a nose job is to have a nose that looks good and breathes well.

There are multiple approaches to nasal surgery - the approach depends on the extent of the procedure needed to address the individual concerns. It is difficult to review all of the intricate details in this segment. In short, an anatomical correction is achieved by taking one’s own anatomy and enhancing the form of the nose to be more desirable. Areas commonly addressed include; the nasal dorsum (the hump), the nasal tip, the width of the nose, and the internal airway.

During a personal consultation, Dr. Fairbanks will be able to discuss the various areas to be corrected and the individual details for the proposed nose job procedure. A Rhinoplasty requires advanced surgical techniques and artistry to achieve the desired goals.

Internal Nasal Airway Surgery is often done in conjunction with the cosmetic Rhinoplasty. This straightens a deviated septum and opens the airway for better breathing. Once the Rhinoplasty is completed and the improved shape is achieved, the work is protected with internal nasal packing and an external nasal splint. This allows for the new nose to better retain the desired results.

Dr. Fairbanks uses the patient’s own tissues when doing nasal surgery. This allows the nose to be sculpted into an optimal shape without the risk of rejection of implanted material. The use of synthetic materials, other than sutures, is discouraged in Rhinoplasty surgery. These materials have been known to work their way out of the nose, causing an unfortunate deformity and scarring.

One should plan on 1-2 weeks off from work. The overall recovery of a Rhinoplasty depends on the individual patient’s health. Initially, there will be some discomfort, which lessens day by day. Pain medications will help. A cool-mist humidifier is encouraged for comfort due to mouth-breathing while the nose is packed. Once the packing is removed, a lighter external splint will be provided. Strenuous activities, including exercise and sports, are discouraged for the first 6 weeks while the healing tissues have a chance to become stronger. Even though immediate results are appreciated shortly after the splint is removed, it takes 3-6 months for all of the swellings to subside. The scars will be difficult to see as they are well hidden. A healthy lifestyle will help with recovery.

Expectations After

A Primary Rhinoplasty

Dr. Fairbanks has extensive experience in dealing with nasal problems. He is an artist. He combines medical science with art to be able to achieve impressive results. This has been demonstrated by the satisfaction of his patients, both cosmetic and reconstruction patients, such as those with cleft lip nasal deformities. Every care and attention will be taken to maintain your health and well-being while providing you the optimal result from your Cosmetic Plastic Surgery operation.

Will My Results Last?

Results of nasal surgery will vary with each patient. The anatomic approach used by Dr. Fairbanks allows the nose to retain a new shape and open the airway. Avoidance of activities that may injure the nose will help to maintain the new appearance.
